Hello! Welcome to English Through Poetry!

Many learners spend years studying English without feeling fully confident. Sometimes, learning English becomes a process of constant movement… adding more, practicing more, reaching for what’s next.

From my experience real progress often begins when the pace softens. I have found that when a student slows down, they begin to hear the language differently.

That’s the kind of awareness poetry naturally develops.

In my Advanced Poetry lessons on CafeTalk, we use short, carefully chosen poems as a doorway into real English conversation. We read. We feel. We talk. And by the end of 35 minutes, students are often saying things in English they have never said before.

This post walks you through how it works, and why it might be exactly what your English practice is missing.

What Happens in an English Through Poetry Lesson

Below is the structure I use in every poetry lesson. Each part has a purpose, and every minute counts.

Part 1: Arrival We begin with a short, warm conversation about your day. Nothing complicated. One small question, one honest answer. The goal is simple: relax your mind and open your voice before we begin.

Part 2: Reading Aloud I read the poem first so you can just listen. Then we read together, and I gently guide your pronunciation. I focus on just one or two sounds per lesson, chosen carefully based on what will make the biggest difference for you. No embarrassment. No pressure. Just gradual, confident improvement.

Part 3: Vocabulary We choose three to five words from the poem. Not random words, but the ones that are beautiful, useful, and full of meaning. We learn each word together, repeat it, and you create your own sentence. By the end, the words feel real to you because you used them yourself.

Part 4: Conversation This is my favorite part. I ask you one open question about the poem, and you lead the way. What does it mean to you? What does it remind you of? What do you feel when you read it? There is no right answer. I listen closely, support your ideas, and help your thoughts become clear English sentences.

Part 5: Reflection and Close We end with one quiet question. Something personal, something open, something you can carry with you after the lesson ends. Students often tell me this is the moment they remember most.

Why Poetry Works for Advanced Learners

You might be wondering: isn't poetry difficult? Yes, and that is exactly the point.

Advanced learners need material that stretches them. Everyday conversation is important, but it rarely pushes you to find new words, new rhythms, or new ways of expressing feeling. Poetry does all of that, gently and naturally.

Here is what students gain from poetry lessons:

Richer vocabulary. The words we study are not just useful, they are memorable. Students tell me they remember "linger" or "stillness" or "harvest" long after the lesson because they felt the word first, in context, connected to an image.

Better pronunciation. Reading poetry aloud slows you down in the best way. You notice individual sounds. You feel the rhythm of English. Over time, your spoken English becomes cleaner and more confident.

More expressive speaking. Talking about poetry means talking about feelings, memories, and ideas. These are the conversations that build real fluency. You stop translating and start thinking in English.

A love of learning. Students who enjoy their lessons learn faster. Poetry lessons feel different from textbook work. They feel personal. That matters.

If this sounds like the kind of English practice for which you’ve been looking, I would love to read a poem with you!
I look forward to seeing you!
