Hello everyone!
 
My name is Hsun-Mei (or you can just call me Isaac).
 
I’m from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and I currently live in Kyoto.
 
After working in Taiwan as a pharmacist, I pursued my interest in philosophy and studied in the United States. Since 2020, I’ve been enrolled in a PhD program at a graduate school in Kyoto.
 
As a Mandarin (Chinese) instructor, I have more than three years of experience, mainly teaching Japanese university students from absolute beginner to business level. At universities, I also taught courses in academic writing and philosophy-related subjects.
 
In my lessons, I tailor the content to each learner’s goals. We work not only on grammar but also on why particular expressions are used—the background and nuance—so you develop practical, real-world communication skills.
 
I speak Japanese, English, and a bit of Kansai dialect. I can teach Mandarin entirely in English if you prefer, and I can also regularly switch between Mandarin and English to match your level.
Beginners are very welcome!
 
My hobbies are playing the cello, photography, and cooking. In class, I like to share Taiwanese culture and everyday life in Kyoto so that you can pick up Mandarin naturally while enjoying the conversation. If you are interested in learning Chinese for medical purposes, I would be very happy to help, since I also have a background in healthcare.
 
I see language as “a key to culture.” Through learning Mandarin, I hope to help you broaden your worldview.
 
In addition to Mandarin lessons, I also offer support with academic writing (in Japanese and English) and consultations about studying abroad.
