Nice to meet all of you lovely souls!

Thank you so much for clicking on my profile. 

My name is Ashley, and I was born in Canada but raised between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico for most of my childhood.

I would describe myself as energetic and peppy!

My first language was Spanish. When I came back to America, I had lost most of my English. My parents decided to enroll me in a French school to learn French. 

I had no choice but to teach myself English as everything around me was focused on it. My English got so good that my mom asked if I could help my Korean neighbour (at the time) perfect her English. She was improving her English at such a quick speed that her mom asked if I could help her 2 older sisters! I knew I had found something. I adore doing it!

 

Shortly after our great ongoing tutoring session, I applied to work as. ESL teacher assistant. & got promoted within a week to full-time ESL after-school tutor. I worked with such amazing individuals that it changed my whole reality. I knew from there my purpose was to teach others English effectively to allow them to feel empowered, fearless & confident when they communicate.

I love to read, madidate and see others excel and thrive!

 

I have a bachelor's degree in international studies and social sciences as well as a Certified TEFL 120-Hour Certificate. I have tutored, translated, and taught ESL since 2017. I've taught very young learners from 3-6, young learners from 7 to 12, teenagers and adults over 40.

 

I have helped 12-year-old students who needed more practice and explanation in lessons.

We focused on everyday school conversations and words they had trouble pronouncing.

I gathered a lot of in-class observations during the 2 years of the ESL program. I then pursued my teaching career in 2019 as a private ESL tutor in Honolulu for young learners ages 3-6 and 12-14. I had 2-to 3 University of Hawaii students a month who needed extra help with some essays and essay topics to write about. I've created thousands of PowerPoints and games for my starter and pre-intermediate little learners.

I love creating animated slides to keep you engaged and thrilled for each lesson! The grammar basics I've taught include pronouns, subject pronouns, singular and plural names, the verb to be, affirmative negative and positive sentence structure, and basic vocabulary such as days of the week, everyday objects, types of jobs, etc.

Also, I have taught elementary which involves everyday expressions, and very basic phrases, and pre-intermediate which involves understanding a simplified article or story and expressing themselves in a familiar context.

Teaching style and philosophy

When teaching younger learners, I like to mime, gesticulate, or act out the language. For young learners, Total Response Time helps them remember vocabulary while also providing an outlet for their energy and helping them stay focused while sitting for long periods.

With my virtual students, I like to teach in the target language only.

 I like to get my students comfortable with learning without translations nearby.

 I like to focus on speaking instead of grammar. This allows me to measure your ability to express yourself.

 I find this way to be most effective in learning the target language naturally and instinctively.

  Mistakes are always corrected as I reinforce the correct usage of the language with praise and encouragement. I like to teach language through real-life scenarios and situations to allow them to get familiar with problem-solving. Fluency is more important than grammar accuracy.

I like to include lots of games in my lessons to make it engaging and educational at the same time.

I like to focus on CLT (communicative language teaching) to emphasize the student's ability to communicate in real-life contexts. This will allow my students to make requests with ease, explain things in their own words, make request and their feelings and preferences. Everyone learns differently. My first lesson will be about your -preferred teaching style (visual, logical, aural etc.) You will only be interested in a course that aligns with your interests, hobbies, and passions.

The last 2 years have been hard as I am recovering from a severe corneal abrasion that left me with blindness in both eyes., I am ready to return to teaching!
