Hello, I’m Juan. I’ve been teaching English for about ten years now. Primarily here in Japan, but also back in the US. I currently work as a Product Designer/UX Designer and I'm a lifelong language learner myself. I'm actually working on my fourth language right now, so I understand the struggle of making progress. I’ve spent a large part of my career helping others get past those hurdles to reach their goals.
My background is in Linguistics, which is the scientific study of language. It plays a vital role in how I see, learn, and teach English, and it gave me a deep interest in the mechanics of how language functions. My experience started in San Diego volunteering with refugees before moving to Japan, where I spent three and a half years at a major conversation school. Since then, I’ve done everything from teaching at Meiji University through a dispatch company to working as a direct-hire ALT. I even ran a cafe here in Japan for a few years, so I’ve used English in many different environments.
I help motivated learners improve their English through fun and varied conversations and methods. My approach is simple: it’s about showing up every day and making steady progress through incremental iterations, just like in design. It isn't fancy; it’s just consistent work. If that sounds like a good fit, check my schedule and we can go from there.
