Some steps in preparing for the first orchestra rehearsal
First, after the concert program has been decided, I have to study the music beforehand in order to prepare for the first rehearsal. This takes countless hours of going through scores (all the musical notes written by the composer) and listening to what the music sounds like. While going through the scores in my head, I have to decide how I want the music to sound. The tempo, dynamics, expression, color, etc. Everything has to be thoroughly thought out beforehand, in great detail! Then I am finally ready to head off to the first rehearsal to practice with an orchestra.
*This is just in a nutshell, the process is actually much longer
Playing an instrument
Most conductors start off by playing an instrument. Playing some piano is a must as a conductor, but my main instrument is the clarinet. The clarinet is a very versatile instrument. It's ability to play very soft to very loud is unmatchable by any other instrument in the orchestra. The clarinet is not only composed for classical music, but also Jazz, Dixieland, Klezmer, Pops and many other types of music!

オーケストラの初リハーサルに向けた準備
まず、コンサートのプログラムが決まったら、最初のリハーサルに向けて、事前に楽曲を勉強しなければなりません。スコア（作曲家が書いたすべての楽器ごとの楽譜）を見ながら、その楽曲がどのような音楽なのかを、自分でピアノを弾いたり、過去に演奏された音源など聴いて、膨大な時間を使って確認していきます。最終的には、頭の中で楽譜を読みながら、その音楽を観衆にどう聴かせるかを決めていくのです。テンポ、ダイナミクス、表情、色彩などなど。全部、事前に細かく考えておかなければなりません。そして、いよいよオーケストラと一緒に練習をする最初のリハーサルに向かいます！
*文章に書くと簡単に聞こえますが、実際はかなり大変な作業です。
楽器を演奏する
指揮者の多くは、彼らのキャリアのステップとして、まず何らかの楽器を演奏することから始めます。言うまでもなく、指揮者は、ピアノが弾けることは必須条件ですが、私のメインの楽器はクラリネットです。クラリネットは非常に汎用性の高い楽器です。小さな音から大きな音まで出せるという点では、オーケストラの他の楽器とは比べものにならないほどです。クラリネットはクラシックだけでなく、ジャズ、ディキシーランド、クレズマー、ポップスなど、さまざまなジャンルの音楽に対応できるんですよ。
