World Heritage Campaign: Somma Vesuvio and Miglio d’Oro in Italy

Laurin N.

Vesuvius reaches a height of 1,281 m above sea level, with a base of 20 km. The volcano is "explosive": the last eruption dates back to 1944 and since then it has been in a state of quiescence. Due to the danger of eruption, a red zone has been created, in fact there is also an emergency plan in case Vesuvius would erupt.

The Somma Vesuvio and Miglio d’Oro, which means "Somma-Vesuvius and Golden Mile" Biosphere Reserve includes the Vesuvius National Park the surrounding coastal strip, the Pompeii area and the Vesuvian villas of the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Nature Reserve is located in the Gulf of Naples and includes the active volcano of Vesuvius, famous for the eruption of 79 AD. that destroyed the city of Pompeii.

The flora present in the territory of the Reserve is essentially Mediterranean; it seems that the volcanic complex has been colonized by more than 900 species.

In the territory of the reserve, people live despite the constant volcanic activity. In this area, fruit, wine and flowers grow.

The Vesuvian Villas are the grandiose complex of eighteenth-century residences, built between the countryside and the coast of the Gulf of Naples. Golden Mile includes 123 villas from the 18th century.
