How to become fluent in English when no one at home speaks the language?

I'm Ling Ling. I am half Hainanese and half Thai. I was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand.

From my brief self-introduction, it is OK to assume that no one in my family speaks English. We use Hainanese and Thai at home.

Growing up, I remember listening to my mom's favorite artist, The Carpenters. I believe that was the starting point of my love for English.

I was anxious about not failing to understand the questions my teacher would ask.

I cannot recall the topic that I had with my teacher. Yet, the test became something I always looked forward to having. Thinking back, it was because pairing up with my teacher was the only time I got to speak English.

My second-grade English teacher was crucial for my English learning journey.

...

I'll be back with part two.
