Robots in Manchester!

Ruth Victorine

Last weekend, I went to Manchester with my family. We went to see some robots at the Museum of Science and Industry. Some of the robots on display were from Japan!

Do you know this robot? He's 'Harry', the Trumpet-player robot. He was created by Toyota and made his debut in 2005 at the Aichi Expo. He has an amazing repertoire, but is retired now.

Meet Kodomodroid. She isn't human, but she was modelled on a real one. She is capable of spontaneous human interaction and can read the news 24 hours a day. She was quite shy when we saw her.

This is Yumi IRB 14000. Built in Switzerland, this robot is designed to work with humans in factories. It has a very high level of accuracy. It can thread a needle! People have been buying it since 2015.

The Human Support Robot is another of Toyota's designs. It was created to help the infirm or sick. It is easy to control. The human uses a touch-screen device, such as a smartphone or tablet, and the robot reacts

Though terrifying to look at, the Telenoid is an absolutely amazing robot. It is used for communication over the internet. It copies the operator's movements. When the operator speaks, the robot moves its mouth. When the operator moves their head, the robot does too. Even its eyes move like the operator's. Shall I get one for our Skype lessons?

What do you think of robots? Are they exciting or are they scary
