This pack is for upper-intermediate to advanced learners who want to engage in critical thinking and complex discussions.

Lesson 1: Breaking Down the Headlines

  • Objective: To understand and analyze news headlines, differentiate between fact and opinion, and predict the content of an article.

  • Key Vocabulary:headline, article, source, bias, fact, opinion, summary, main idea.

  • Activities:

    • Warm-up: Read 5-6 headlines and guess what the articles are about.

    • Main Activity: Read a short news article and identify the main idea and key facts.

    • Discussion: Talk about the importance of reliable sources and how to spot bias.

    • Wrap-up: Write a one-sentence summary of the news article.

Lesson 2: Expressing Your Perspective

  • Objective: To confidently express personal opinions on a given topic and support them with reasons and examples.

  • Key Vocabulary:in my opinion..., I think that..., I feel that..., for example..., what's your take on...?, I agree, I disagree.

  • Activities:

    • Warm-up: Quick-fire round of opinions on simple topics (e.g., pizza is better than pasta).

    • Main Activity: Read an article on a controversial topic and the student practices expressing their opinion and giving reasons for it.

    • Discussion: Discuss different points of view on the topic and practice agreeing and disagreeing respectfully.

    • Wrap-up: Write a short paragraph summarizing their point of view.

Lesson 3: The Art of the Debate

  • Objective: To participate in a structured debate, presenting arguments, listening to opposing views, and responding effectively.

  • Key Vocabulary:argument, opposing view, evidence, I understand what you're saying, but..., however, on the other hand..., my point is....

  • Activities:

    • Warm-up: Brainstorm arguments for and against a given statement (e.g., "The internet is a positive influence").

    • Main Activity: A formal mini-debate where the student argues a specific side of a topic.

    • Practice: Focus on using transitional phrases to connect ideas smoothly.

    • Wrap-up: Reflect on the experience and what was challenging about debating in English.

Lesson 4: Global Citizen

  • Objective: To discuss a broad global topic in-depth, combining information from multiple sources and personal insights.

  • Key Vocabulary: Vocabulary specific to the chosen topic (e.g., climate change, sustainability, economic impact, social responsibility).

  • Activities:

    • Warm-up: Watch a short video or read a summary about a global topic (e.g., renewable energy).

    • Main Activity: A free-flowing conversation where the student presents their understanding of the topic and shares their perspective.

    • Discussion: Talk about the different effects of the topic on various countries and cultures.

    • Wrap-up: Summarize the main points of the conversation and reflect on what they've learned.
