30-Minute Lesson Plan: Describing People – Functional English
Objective: Students will learn how to describe physical appearances and personality traits using functional phrases through dialogues, guided practice, and role-play activities.
Lesson Outline
1. Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Objective: Engage the student and introduce the topic in a relatable way.
- Greet the student:
“Hi! Today, we’re going to learn how to describe people. This will help you when talking about friends, family, or meeting new people.” - Ask an opening question to activate prior knowledge:
“Can you tell me about your best friend? What does he or she look like?”
(Guide them gently if needed: “For example, is he tall or short?”)
2. Vocabulary and Key Phrases (10 minutes)
- Objective: Teach and reinforce descriptive vocabulary and functional phrases.

Introduce Key Questions
Write or share the functional phrases:- “What does he/she look like?” (for physical appearance).
- “What is he/she like?” (for personality).

Teach Vocabulary
Use visuals or flashcards/dialogues to introduce:- Physical Descriptions: tall, short, thin, heavy, curly hair, straight hair, blue eyes, glasses, etc.
- Personality Descriptions: kind, friendly, shy, funny, serious, etc.

Dialogue Practice
- Read aloud and share this dialogue:
- A: “What does your brother look like?”
- B: “He is tall and has short, brown hair.”
- A: “What is he like?”
- B: “He is friendly and funny.”
- Have the student repeat each line. Encourage correct pronunciation and intonation.
- Read aloud and share this dialogue:
3. Guided Practice (10 minutes)
- Objective: Students apply what they’ve learned in controlled activities.

Activity 1: Fill-in-the-Blanks Dialogue
- Provide a partially completed dialogue:
- A: “What does your teacher look like?”
- B: “She is ____ and has ____.”
- A: “What is she like?”
- B: “She is ____.”
- Guide the student to fill in the blanks using vocabulary provided.

Activity 2: Describe the Picture
- Show an image of a person.
- Ask the student to describe the person:
- “What does he/she look like?”
- “What is he/she like?”
4. Role-Play and Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Objective: Reinforce learning with real-world application and summarize key points.

- Pretend you are at a party introducing people. Use a scenario:
“This is my friend, Sarah. Can you describe her to someone who hasn’t met her yet?” - Encourage the student to create their own sentences:
“Sarah is short, has curly hair, and is very kind.”
