Lesson Plan: Free Talk (Adults)
Level: Intermediate (adaptable for lower/higher levels)
Time: 60 minutes
Class Type: Adult ESL learners (group or one-on-one)
Topic: Free Talk – Building Confidence in Speaking
Lesson Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will:
-
Practice fluency through open-ended conversation.
-
Expand vocabulary related to everyday topics.
-
Improve confidence in expressing opinions and asking questions.
-
Develop listening and turn-taking skills.
Lesson Procedure
1. Warm-Up (5–10 minutes)
-
Greet students and create a relaxed environment.
-
Quick icebreaker: “What was the best part of your week so far?” or “If you could teleport anywhere right now, where would you go?”
-
Focus: Set a friendly, low-pressure mood.
2. Conversation Kick-Off (10 minutes)
-
Write 2–3 open-ended starter questions on the board:
-
“What do you usually do on weekends?”
-
“Do you prefer city life or country life? Why?”
-
“What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?”
-
-
Students discuss in pairs or small groups (or with teacher in one-on-one).
-
Teacher monitors, takes notes of errors or good phrases for later feedback.
3. Main Free Talk Activity (25–30 minutes)
-
Option A: Student-Led Topics
-
Each student shares a topic of interest (travel, food, hobbies, technology, culture).
-
Teacher guides conversation by asking follow-up questions, encouraging peer-to-peer interaction.
-
-
Option B: Prompt-Based Discussion (if students are shy)
-
Use conversation prompt cards, random “would you rather” questions, or a short visual stimulus (funny picture, current news headline).
-
Example prompts:
-
“If you could change one thing about your city, what would it be?”
-
“What makes a person interesting to talk to?”
-
“How do you usually celebrate special occasions?”
-
-
-
Encourage natural conversation, correcting only major misunderstandings, not every small mistake.
4. Language Focus & Feedback (10 minutes)
-
Write down key errors (grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary gaps) noted during the free talk.
-
Review them with the class in a supportive way:
-
“I heard someone say ___, but a better way is ___.”
-
-
Highlight good phrases students used, introduce a couple of useful expressions related to today’s talk (e.g., “That reminds me of…,” “In my opinion,” “To be honest…”).
5. Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
-
Quick reflection: Ask students, “What did you learn about your classmates today?” or “What new word or phrase will you remember from today?”
-
Assign optional homework:
-
Write a short journal entry about something they wish to talk about in the next lesson.
-
Or, bring a photo/object next time to spark conversation.
-
