Подробности урока

In this lesson, we will focus on learning how to write naturally in English.

Japanese students of English generally have a large vocabulary and good grammar knowledge. They know how to create many types of sentences, but they often do not know which ones sound "natural."

By learning to write commonly-used words, expressions, and phrases, you can improve your knowledge of English. This will also help your conversational and listening skills, too!

This lesson can also be personalized! I have experience with writing:

  • Fiction
  • Non-fiction
  • Letters

Please tell me which topic you would like to focus on when you begin the course.

Lesson Contents

  • Please write ~200 words on a selected topic and send it to me as a message on Cafetalk or as an attachment (Word document).
  • I will proofread it and send you a Word document with corrections. I will highlight the sections that need improvement.
  • Then, I will write out detailed explanations of 1) Why the highlighted selection is not natural and 2) What is a better way to write and express this idea.

I believe it is as important to explain why something is correct as why it is incorrect; this way, we can learn from our mistakes and learn good habits, too!

  • For the first lesson, please write an introduction (~200 words) about yourself and what you would like to study.
  • After the first lesson, I will send back the corrections in 1-2 days.

Here is an example with a business focus:

(Original Sample)

Thank you. I’m sorry it was hard to explain. Feel free to ask me anything with e-mail or something at any time.

(Errors Highlighted and Numbered)

Thank you.(1) I’m sorry it was (2) hard to explain. (3) Feel free to ask me (4) anything with (5) e-mail or something at any time.

(Corrections Inserted)

Thank you [very much,] and I'm sorry it was [so] hard to explain. [Please feel free to email me any questions (6) you may have.]

(Natural Phrasing)

Thank you very much, and I'm sorry it was so hard to explain. Please feel free to email me any questions you may have.

  1. ありがとうございます can be a sentence in Japanese, but in English, we generally follow "Thank you" with a comma "," and join it with the following sentence. "very much" is also better for a business context.
  2. "hard to explain" by itself sounds a bit harsh/strong. It implies "you were not able to understand," which is slightly impolite. By adding "so," it creates the idea/feeling that "We both know this was difficult, and I'm sorry it was difficult for you," similar to how 「大変お待たせしました」 is a small apology that is said to someone who had to wait so long.
  3. With any imperative in English, "feel free, wait, go" it is imprortant to remember "Please."
  4. Natural ideas are expressed with as few words as possible. By changing "ask" to "email" , we can delete the now unnecessary "with" in the sentence. However, "any questions" sounds nicer than "anything," especially in a business context.
  5. "Or something at any time" sounds unnatural because it uses many words to describe something that could be said with one word "question."
  6. Finally, "you may have" is a polite way to end this sentence: "Feel free to email me your questions," is casual. "Please feel free to email me any questions you may have," is formal.

Thank you very much!
