Lesson Goal:
Students will understand the structure of narrative writing and practice telling a clear, engaging story orally.


Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify the basic structure of a narrative

  • Use sequencing words to tell a story

  • Speak clearly about past events in order


Lesson Structure (30 Minutes)

1. Warm-Up: Story Starter (5 minutes)

Teacher Action:

  • Ask:

    • Have you ever had a funny or scary experience?

    • What happened yesterday after school?

Student Task:

  • Share short answers using past tense:

    • Yesterday, I…

    • One time, I…


2. Introduction to Narrative Writing (5 minutes)

Teacher Explanation:

  • Narrative writing tells a story.

  • A good narrative has:

    1. Beginning – Who, where, when

    2. Middle – What happened

    3. Ending – Result or lesson

Key Vocabulary:

  • story

  • character

  • setting

  • problem

  • ending

Model Example (spoken):

Yesterday after school, I went to the park with my friend. Suddenly, it started to rain, so we ran home. In the end, we laughed about it.


3. Narrative Language Practice (7 minutes)

Teacher Input:
Introduce sequencing words:

  • First…

  • Then…

  • After that…

  • Finally…

Student Practice:

  • Students describe a simple event:

    • A school day

    • A trip

    • A surprise

Speaking Task:

  • Speak for 20–30 seconds using at least three sequencing words.

Teacher Feedback:

  • Focus on order and clarity

  • Gentle correction of past tense


4. Guided Speaking Activity: Short Narrative Talk (8 minutes)

Task:
Students prepare and tell a short story using narrative structure.

Story Plan on Screen / Board:

  • Who?

  • Where?

  • What happened?

  • How did it end?

Example:

Last weekend, my family and I went to the beach. First, we played in the water. Then, we had lunch together. Finally, we went home tired but happy.

Student Action:

  • Speak for 30–40 seconds

  • Teacher may prompt:

    • What happened next?

    • How did you feel?


5. Wrap-Up & Reflection (5 minutes)

Discussion Questions:

  • Which part of the story is the most important?

  • Was it easy to tell a story in English?

Teacher Summary:

  • Review narrative structure:

    • Beginning → Middle → Ending

  • Encourage students to practice storytelling in daily life.

Optional Homework:

  • Prepare a short written or spoken story for the next class.
