Objectives:

Students will learn how to initiate and participate in a conversation.

Students will practice formulating appropriate questions in a conversation.

Students will practice making polite requests in various situations.

Introduction (10 minutes):

Begin the lesson by discussing the importance of effective communication in daily life. Explain that being able to initiate conversations, ask questions, and make requests politely is crucial for building relationships and getting things done.

Discuss the difference between open-ended and closed-ended questions. Open-ended questions require more than a yes/no answer and are often used to initiate conversations.

Main Activities (30 minutes):

Activity 1: Initiating Conversations (10 minutes)

Provide student with conversation prompt cards or topics (e.g., hobbies, favourite books, weekend plans).

Ask student to initiate a conversation based on the provided prompts. Encourage them to use open-ended questions to keep the conversation going.

Activity 2: Formulating Questions (10 minutes)

Explain to student that asking questions is a great way to show interest in a conversation and gather information.

Show a sentence on a flash card and ask student to come up with questions related to that sentence. For example, if the sentence is "She is going to the zoo," student could ask questions like "Which zoo is she going to?" or "What animals is she excited to see?"

Discuss the questions, emphasizing the importance of relevance and clarity.

Activity 3: Making Requests (10 minutes)

Present various scenarios on scenario cards (e.g., asking a friend for help with homework, requesting extra ketchup at a restaurant, or asking a teacher for clarification on an assignment).

Have student practice making polite requests based on the scenarios. Encourage them to use "please" and to be clear about their needs.

Ask student to role-play a scenario of their choice, demonstrating how to make effective requests.

Give scenarios that require making requests. Students should write down their polite requests for each scenario.

Conclusion (5 minutes):

Summarize the key points of the lesson: initiating conversations, formulating questions, and making polite requests.

Ask student to share their experiences from the practice activities and how they felt about initiating conversations and making requests.

Assessment:

Assess students' understanding through their participation in class discussions, their ability to formulate relevant questions, and their success in making polite requests in the scenarios.

Homework :

Assign homework that involves practicing initiating conversations with family members or friends and reporting back on how it went.
