I have used the theme “Saving Our Planet” to introduce new vocabulary for young learners while providing a meaningful context for learning. Students will complete grammar exercises and create their own sentences by using the new words. These sentences will improve pronunciation and fluency through repetition. Additionally, they will practice listening skills and engage in open discussions about the topic.
I begin the lesson by inviting the student to participate in a roleplay activity, asking if they would like to join in. This activity involves mimicking various elements related to our planet, such as the sun, moon, trees, ocean, animals, and humans. The student guesses which element is being portrayed. This roleplay activity helps the student connect more deeply with the concepts of the planet we live on.
I present the new language in the form of a story. I read a short story about our planet and the importance of taking care of it. Once I have told the story to the student, I show various flashcards related to environmental conservation and provide the correct names for each picture.
After presenting all the flashcards and ensuring that the student is familiar with each one, we move on to watching a short video about saving the planet. Following the video, we recap through a general conversation, discussing key points that were covered. This discussion allows me to present new language concepts on the whiteboard in sentence form. The student will then help by filling in the correct keywords for each sentence.
This will be followed by choral practice focused specifically on pronunciation and the students ability to produce sentences more fluently. This process will be repeated until the student can use the new language accurately. I take this opportunity to demonstrate the correct pronunciation of the “r” in the word "rain" by positioning my tongue against my palate and repeating the "r" sound. The student is encouraged to repeat this sound until they can pronounce it correctly.
The student then completes a worksheet called "Planet Earth". I provide clear, easy-to-follow instructions on how to complete question 1, “What's the word?” followed by question 2: “Fill it in!” and lastly question 3: “Making it right.We engage in discussions about ways to save our planet. This approach encourages students to communicate freely in a real-life context while participating in activities that help them practice the new language. Afterward, they complete a worksheet titled "Planet Earth," where they draw a picture and write about how they believe people should respect nature in order to live on a greener planet.
