Your Grammar Rules: Collocations, Phrasal Verbs and Idioms

1. Collocations

Step 1: Let us start with a warm up exercise. Let us read these sentences.

1) How do you get to school? How many hours do you travel?
2) Do you have a to-do list for the party? Do you get the things done on time?
3) What do you normally do when you get home from school?

Common verb used here is:       ..................

Definition of Collocation:
Collocation refers to a group of two or more words that usually go together. 

Here is a list of verb collocations
 
Have: have a bath/ have a drink/ have a good time/ have a haircut
 
Make: make a difference/make a mess/make a mistake/make a noise
 
Pay: pay a fine/pay attention/pay by credit card/pay cash/pay interest
 
Get:get ready/get started/get the impression/get the message/get the sack

Step 2: Let us try to make sentences with some of them. Take around 5-8 minutes to write 3 sentences of any of the above verb collocations.

Step 4: Guess the meaning
1) I got upset with Sam because he didn’t invite me to his party last night.
2) Aren’t you getting fed up with your job? You work too many hours and your boss is always rude to you.
3) I always get excited before going to a new place.
4) Marchie got fired from his job after being late for the third time in a row.
5) It’s easy to get distracted at work. People are always talking to you and it’s difficult to focus.

Step 5: Discussion on the above activity and feedback provided

Step 6: Matching exercise

Now match the collocations from above with their meaning below:
1) Get upseta) To become happy and enthusiastic about
                                            something
2) Get fed upb) To become angry/worried about                                                                     something.
3) Get excitedc) To become unable to concentrate or give                                                       attention to something.
4) Get firedd) To become annoyed or bored with something                                               that you feel you have accepted for too long.
5) Get distractede) To be dismissed from a job for doing
                                             something wrong.
 
Step 7: Phrasal Verbs


1) GET ON (WITH SOMEONE)
 
E.g. They didn’t really get on with each other at school but now they are best friends.
 
2) GET ON
 
E.g. We really need to get on with the presentation. The deadline is tomorrow.
 
3) GET ON
 
E.g. We won’t be able to get on this bus, it’s too full.

Step 8: Practice

Match the uses above with their definition below:

a) To go onto a means of public transportation - (remember: for cars/taxis you use get in).
b) To have a friendly relationship with someone.
c) To continue doing something, especially after an interruption.

Step 8: Idioms

E.g. I finally felt relieved when I got it off my chest. I had felt guilty for years.
 
Match the idiom above with its definition below
a) To lie to someone about something.
b) To tell someone about something that has been worrying/bothering you.
c) To feel uncomfortable about doing something.

Step 9: Discussion
● Now let us discuss the following:
 
1) When was the last time you got something off your chest? What happened?
2) Has anyone ever got something off their chest and made you upset?
3) Do you think it is better to get things off your chest or to keep them inside? Why?

Step 10: Recap on the vocabulary learned.

As homework,  you will carry out a writing activity:

Using exactly 10 words in each sentence, write 3 sentences using either a collocation, a phrasal verb or the idiom from this lesson.
