Lesson Title: Healthy Lifestyle and Habits
Skill focus: Reading (for gist and for details)
Student level: B1 (intermediate)
Lesson Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:
1. Identify the main idea and specific details of an article about health and lifestyle.
2. Identify vocabulary items related to health and lifestyle.
3. Provide his/her opinion using adverbs of frequency.
This lesson is composed of 3 parts:
1. Vocabulary pre-teaching. (15 minutes)
2. Reading and answering questions. (25 minutes)
3. Providing opinion using adverbs of frequency (10 minutes)
1. Stage 1: Vocabulary pre-teaching:
Objectives:
· To test student knowledge and introduce new vocabulary items.
Procedure:
During this stage, the teacher asks the student to brainstorm vocabulary items related to health and lifestyle. Then the student finishes a short task with the new vocabulary items.
The teacher then drills the new vocabulary items and asks the student to use them in their own sentences.
2. Stage 2: Reading an article: Health and lifestyle:
Objective:
During this stage, the student will be able to:
· Read a text and answer questions pertaining to the general idea then the details of the text.
Procedure:
During the stage, the student reads the text one time to answer a question about the general idea of the text. Then, the student reads the text a second and a third time to answer questions about the details of the text.
The teacher asks the student to expand on the text’s ideas and provide justifications for his/her answers.
3. Stage 3: Expressing opinion using adverbs of frequency and feedback:
The teacher picks ideas from the text and asks the student to use adverbs of frequency to talk about the frequency of their habits. The teacher then provides praise and feedback on the student’s performance.
Note 1: After the lesson, the teacher provides the student with a worksheet with all the main ideas discussed during the lesson as well as any necessary homework to consolidate the newly acquired vocabulary or expressions. The teacher can also include written corrections to the students’ errors.
Note 2: Teacher talking time is minimal. The teacher’s role is to guide and prompt the student to express themselves as much as possible.
