課程介紹

The Creative Writing Course helps students develop storytelling skills and techniques, building their creative thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Dive into the world of creative writing and become a master storyteller! Unlock the power of narrative, foster critical thinking, and learn skills applicable across many disciplines. Your story starts here: enroll today and learn how craft compelling characters, build amazing worlds, and tell tales that come to life.

Course description:

In this Creative Writing course, students will learn the fundamentals of storytelling. They'll learn to shape the narrator's voice and perspective, map out key scenes, and incorporate effective pacing. They will also explore the concept of visualizing scenes as if for film, considering 'camera movement' in their prose.

The student will think of a story they want to tell, then, by reading and talking about parts of popular stories we will learn how to tell their story the best way we can.

Who tells the story; how do they tell it; how fast or slow does the story develop; what is the crisis; how does the hero save the day; does the hero save the day; and how do we describe the pictures you want the reader to see?

Example class

Lesson 3: Narrative Perspective.

• Lecture: Introduce narrative perspective and its different types (first-person, third-person limited, third-person omniscient).
• Processing the Text: Students share reading excerpts of different texts which demonstrate different narrative perspectives.
• Diagrams of Thinking: Use a Venn diagram to highlight the differences and overlaps between narrative perspectives.
• Analysis: Identify and discuss the narrative perspective in the students' stories.
• Homework: Rewrite a scene from their story from a different narrative perspective.

Lesson plan (short).

Lesson 1: Story Plot: The student will think of a story they want to write. Come up with the story's overall plot. Understand what the story is about and what events and conflicts will drive it.

Lesson 2: Narrative Voice:
Decide on the narrative voice. What is the narrator's attitude toward the events and characters? This will significantly influence how the story is told.

Lesson 3: Narrative Perspective: Decide on the narrative perspective. Does the narrator know the future or only the present and past? Do they have a 'knowing perspective' delivered in a detached, sometimes abstract way, even if they don't explicitly discuss future events?

Lesson 4: Scene Plotting: Plot out the scenes needed to get from the beginning to the end of the story. These should be the key events and moments that drive the plot forward.

Lesson 5: Pacing:Compare your plotted scenes against known plotting and pacing theories. This will help you ensure that your story has a good rhythm and flow, keeping the reader engaged from beginning to end.

Lesson 6: Scene Revision:Rewrite and fine-tune the scenes based on your pacing analysis. This is the time to make any major changes needed to improve the story's structure and pacing.

Lesson 7: Visualize: Imagine what the scenes would look like if they were filmed. This can help you better understand the physical and spatial aspects of your scenes and how your characters interact with their environment.

Lesson 8: Camera Movement: Imagine how the camera would move around those scenes. This can help you think about what details to highlight, what moments to linger on, and how to create a sense of motion and dynamism in your prose.

Lesson 9: Write the Prose or Screenplay: With all the preparation done, you can now write the prose or screenplay. This is where you bring together all the elements you've worked on - plot, voice, perspective, scenes, and visuals - into a coherent and compelling narrative.

Lesson 10: Final Draft and Wrap Party!: Students present the ‘final draft’ of their story. Then, in movie-making tradition, we celebrate our hard work with a party, talking about films and movies we like and having fun.

Benefits beyond Creative Writing.

The skills learned in this course will benefit students in other areas of study. The ability to organize and express thoughts coherently is valuable in every academic field.

    • Understanding narrative structure can enhance comprehension, pattern recognition and predictive abilities; skills vital for analysis in social sciences, history, and law.
    • Developing a clear, distinctive voice can aid in persuasive writing; help uncover bias; and write compelling arguments in political science, philosophy and sociology.
    • Understanding pacing can improve students' ability to maintain reader or listener interest, critical in fields like marketing and journalism. It can also help strategic thinking, a skill essential for project management.
    • The ability to visualize scenes or concepts can enhance understanding of abstract concepts in visual arts or problem-solving fields, such as chemistry, engineering, mathematics, and physics.
