Cafetalk Profile

<Why did I decide to study Japanese?>

Annyeonhase!

My name is Ahn Sung Kyu. and I work as a Korean language tutor.

I am from Korea, but I moved to Japan in 2012 and this will be my 12th year in Japan.

Before living in Japan, I could not speak Japanese.

I was able to hold daily-level conversations in English, so I naively thought that if I studied more English, the lingua franca, and used English to live my daily life, I would be fine.

However, it didn’t take me long to realise that life without Japanese in Japan would be quite difficult.

I then went to institutions where I could learn Japanese, as well as attendding private Japanese lessons for about six months, but I realised that many of the study methods were designed for exams and were not suitable for my situation, as I wanted to improve my conversational skills quickly.

I just wanted to speak Japanese!

I wanted to listen to a lot of what was being said in Japanese as I did when learning English, and I wanted to speak a lot too!

This is why I got a job at a cleaning company where the hiring criteria was not too high, even if my Japanese wasn’t up to par, and I started working as a hotel bed-maker.

After work, I went to cafés rather than libraries to study Japanese. I studied in places where there were as many customers as possible, because I wanted to listen to what the people around me were saying in Japanese.

I listened to a lot of Japanese radio and watched a lot of TV.

My Japanese had gradually improved and I started teaching Korean in my first year in Japan. This will be my 11th year of teaching.

I am currently teaching Korean to 30 students (both offline and online).

I try to be as encouraging as possible to keep the learning process enjoyable.

Please join me and let’s study together!

I look forward to working with you.

<Lesson Style>

I think the most important thing in my lessons is to use my own experiences living abroad in Japan to help students learn to converse as quickly as possible.
