Cafetalk Profile

<Why did I decide to study Japanese?>

Annyeonhase!

My name is Ahn Sung Kyu. and I work as a Korean language tutor.

I am from Korea, but I moved to Japan in 2012 and this will be my 12th year in Japan.

Before living in Japan, I could not speak Japanese.

I was able to hold daily-level conversations in English, so I naively thought that if I studied more English, the lingua franca, and used English to live my daily life, I would be fine.

However, it didn’t take me long to realise that life without Japanese in Japan would be quite difficult.

I then went to institutions where I could learn Japanese, as well as attendding private Japanese lessons for about six months, but I realised that many of the study methods were designed for exams and were not suitable for my situation, as I wanted to improve my conversational skills quickly.

I just wanted to speak Japanese!

I wanted to listen to a lot of what was being said in Japanese as I did when learning English, and I wanted to speak a lot too!

This is why I got a job at a cleaning company where the hiring criteria was not too high, even if my Japanese wasn’t up to par, and I started working as a hotel bed-maker.

After work, I went to cafés rather than libraries to study Japanese. I studied in places where there were as many customers as possible, because I wanted to listen to what the people around me were saying in Japanese.

I listened to a lot of Japanese radio and watched a lot of TV.

My Japanese had gradually improved and I started teaching Korean in my first year in Japan. This will be my 11th year of teaching.

I am currently teaching Korean to 30 students (both offline and online).

I try to be as encouraging as possible to keep the learning process enjoyable.

Please join me and let’s study together!

I look forward to working with you.

<Lesson Style>

I think the most important thing in my lessons is to use my own experiences living abroad in Japan to help students learn to converse as quickly as possible.

<Beginner level> *Grammar + Conversation

1. Studying grammar

Study correct grammar and consolidate the basics!

2. Application to Korean conversation

Practise the grammar you studied so you can talk about it in Korean.

3. Homework

Continue to review and revise the Korean expressions you have studied.

<Pre-Intermediate to Advanced level> *Conversation

1. We will decide on an everyday event or topic and converse a lot in Korean.

Only the areas that students might struggle to understand will be explained in Japanese in an easy-to-understand manner to improve your conversational skills.
