Katherine Britton 講師的自我介紹

English

Hi! I’m Katherine, an English language teacher with about 20 years experience teaching English. I live near Cambridge in the UK with my husband and two kids, and our lovely cat. I’ve taught English to people from so many different backgrounds, ages and nationalities, but the one thing that unites everyone is the fascinating new perspective on life, on words and on people that learning a new language can have. My absolute favourite part of my job is helping people expand their horizons and perspectives with English, expand their confidence with their English and therefore their goals, and learn to love the English language for how it can transform their life. 

 

I’ve always loved reading and the power of words and language, so after I graduated with a degree in Linguistics and Psychology, teaching English felt like a natural progression. Since gaining my CELTA qualification in 2000 I’ve taught in a variety of settings, both face-to-face and online, and have taught here in the UK and in Japan, where I lived for 7 years. I’ve taught one-to-one and small groups, both face to face and online. I most recently worked with asylum seekers and refugees in a secondary school in the UK, teaching English language and skills to help them succeed in their mainstream lessons and eventually pass their GCSEs. Seeing my students work so hard to overcome so many barriers and meet their goals was truly an amazing experience.  

 

My teaching style is friendly, relaxed and tailored to my students’ needs. I work with my students to find the best plan to help them grow, and the best techniques to help them grow while feeling safe, relaxed and confident. We learn by making mistakes (in life and in language!) so I always aim to create an environment where students feel safe making mistakes and trying new techniques without feeling uncomfortable. 

 

I offer an introductory lesson so students can see if my lessons and methods are the right fit. My lessons are for adults of all levels, from absolute beginner through to advanced. I speak conversational-level Japanese, and if students prefer me to use or understand Japanese occasionally, I’m happy to do that. However if they’d prefer for me to use no Japanese at all so they have a completely English learning environment, I’m also happy to do that. My lessons are fully customisable to my students’ needs, and I’m equally happy to let my students take the lead in terms of topics and areas of study, or to allow me to decide which areas would best suit my students. This can all be discussed in the introductory lesson, and can be modified at any point during the course. 

 

My lessons are a safe, inclusive and welcome space for all students.

I offer different types of lessons for you to try out - some more common such as conversation, grammar and pronunciation, while other courses offer more unique ways to expand and strengthen your English, such as learning English through lyrics and fiction extracts to enrich your English through literary devices, imagery and the magic of literary English.
