Olivia S Tutor Profile

This tutor is currently on leave.

Hello everyone! My name is Olivia, and I'm from the United States. I am half-Japanese, half-American, so I have native bilingual fluency in both English and Japanese. I have also visited Japan several times, so I am familiar with Japanese culture and customs. I attended Miami University, where I majored in International Studies and minored in Spanish and Latin American Studies. I was lucky enough to spend a semester abroad in Cusco, Peru during college, which was an incredible experience! I even got to visit Machu Picchu and pet an alpaca. My biggest fields of interest are learning new languages, and also learning about all cultures and traditions across the world! I am interested in teaching because I believe learning a new language, and therefore learning about a new country and culture, can enrich the lives of all of us and add more diversity to the world.

Teaching Background
I participated in a volunteer program where college students were recruited to teach elementary school students a second language, called the Foreign Language Program. I taught Spanish to a class of first graders for the duration of one semester, in an in-person, classroom setting. My curriculum mainly consisted of vocab word flashcards, songs in Spanish, basic phrases, and most importantly, constantly speaking in Spanish! Although teaching 12 six-year-olds was a challenge, it was a very rewarding experience to be able to share the joy of second language learning with these children.

Teaching Style
My language teaching philosophy, first and foremost, is the idea that conversation is the most important component of becoming more comfortable with a language. You can learn as much vocab and grammar as you want, but you won't learn how to apply it until you practice speaking. The more you speak, the more confident you become in your ability to apply the language in real life!

For those wanting to take my lessons, I recommend having a beginner or intermediate level of the target language. But if you want to jump right in, that's fine too! I am open to learners of all ages and backgrounds. I like to be flexible with the subject of the conversation, so if you want to talk about how to order food in a restaurant one day, and animals the next, that's good with me!

I encourage everyone and anyone to reach out and sign up for a lesson with me. My hope is that after our conversations, you will feel more comfortable speaking English/Japanese/Spanish and using it in the real world!
