Hello, everyone. How are you today? It’s Teacher Asuka.

Today, I’m going to talk about ‘Psychiatric Nutrition’ , which is a part of Preventive Medicine’.

When it comes to the Preventive Medicine, you may think it a kind of field of medicine, preventing people from getting sick. Yes, that’s all right. But, if you hear the word ’Psychiatric Nutrition’, you might think it difficult. This new field has been introduced in the year 2000 and related to our daily habits.

The survey from the Welfare and Labor Ministry in 2017, out of the illness like Diabetes, Cancer, Heart disease, Brain disease and Mental illness, the number of patients who is suffering from mental illness is the most in Japan. Therefore, you might think that everyone might be suffering from such mental illness like depression. They also say that many people will tend to be suffering from the mental illness due to having some stress like human relations at the office, long working hours, compatibility between work and life as well as COVID-19 pandemic and so on recently.

However, according to the leading expert in the field of 'Psychiatric Nutrition', Professor Kunugi Hiroshi, from the Teikyo University Medical Department, it has reported that our diet and nutrition may cause us some mental problems. There seems to be a study related between onset of mental illness and shortage of nutrition or diet. Diet and nutrition remedies has already been incorporated in the medical field in overseas.

Professor Kunugi says, we need to check our daily diet to prevent us from mental illness. Unbalanced and unhealthy diet like processed goods, lack of fruits or vegetables, lack of exercise and lack of sleep can cause us physical and mental disorders. He also says that mental illness is a lifestyle-related diseases nowadays. In short, we can get over our mental problems and keep in good shape, through good diet, good exercise, and good sleep from a ‘Psychiatric Nutrition’ point of view.

Thank you for staying with me as well.

See you next time.
