(18) The Script - Superheroes

Halloween is just around the corner. What are you going to dress up as this year? A superhero like Anna or Elsa, like everyone is going to? Whichever you decide to be, please make sure you are covered from head to toe over your costume with CDC-recommended full protective gear―a hood, a special mask, a face shield, double gloves, a gown, the whole shebang―when you go trick-or-treating because it's cold outside.

Anyway, speaking of superheroes, let's take a brief look at how superheroes have evolved over billions of years:

1) Hiromi Go (originated in Japan; the oldest traceable ancestor; His son is still alive to this day. See Tutor Jordan Ring's column here.)

2) Hiro (crossed the Pacific; See Tutor Ellie's column here.)

And that last one is the song I'd like to talk about today.

The Script is an Irish band. If you recall the cheerleading scenes in Taylor Swift's music video on my last post, she and the others were all wearing a cheerleading uniform with the stylized letters "TS" on their chests. I couldn't figure out what those letters represented then, but now I think they are the initials of "The Script." I think she's in love again.

"Superheroes" is a song about people who are struggling in society. The song's message is that if you keep working hard, you will get stronger and become a superhero. This is a very empowering song. But apparently, The Script's English grammar power is not strong enough yet, as the lyrics at 2:46 and again at 2:57 go "'Cause they've taken too much hits." That should be "too many hits" because the word "hit" is a countable noun. The Script should learn grammar from Taylor Swift, who goes on "too many dates."

The video for this song shows a struggling single father. He is out of a job, but he doesn't want his child to worry, so he leaves home every morning in his business suit. He then heads to a garbage dump, where he enjoys treasure hunting. He changes clothes on the way. I'm sure you were disappointed to see that he wasn't wearing long johns. I'm also sure you then wondered what the heck that was that he was wearing anyway. I did, too. Anyway, did you see all those birds in the video? I think that they are like you. They come to the landfill for the same reason you come to my blog: the love of garbage.(See how my blog article is structured here.) Did you also see that the man isn't wearing a mask, let alone a hazmat suit, in a place where the stench must be unbearable? That's odd, isn't it? But I think that's intentional. That way, he can get exposed to all the toxins and radiation, which will cause his genes to mutate, make him a teenager, give him ninja skills, and turn him into a superhero ― a superhero of this kind:

I guess in a year or two all those scavengers there will transform into Teenage Mutant Ninja Whoopi Goldbergs. By the way, the music video was shot in Johannesburg, South Africa, where Halloween is still six months away.

OK, that's it for today! Thank you for reading! As always, I'd really appreciate it if you "Like" this post and/or leave a comment. And I have a little announcement to make: I have started Twitter! I tweet, among other things, my favorite songs since I can't cover all of them in my blog. So, what are you waiting for? Get your Febreze ready and follow me (and mute me) now! Please!

The Script(ザ・スクリプト)はアイルランドのバンドです。
