Being resourceful.....

David

Got an injured arm? Work on your running!
Got a bad leg? Train your upper body!

Painful arm but you still want to work your upper body (some studies have shown a potential correlation between training your non injured limb during a period of injury - ie bad left shoulder = train your right shoulder, and quicker recovery time as well as maintained muscle mass) - train your non injured side!

Want to add more resistance but you can’t hold a barbell? Use a backpack and fill it with whatever you have (books, tins of pulses etc!)

.

After training clients and athletes for 11 years I was fortunate to have access to a large amount of exercise equipment to use myself and with others. But living in Japan for two years put an end to that and it forced me to become resourceful.

Right now I’m dealing with rehabbing a TFCC tear in my wrist, which is once again forcing me to become resourceful. At first it was a burden but now I’m 100% dedicated to recovering, and enjoying training in a variety of different ways. In particular, working on a number of weak links so that I will be fitter and stronger than ever when I am fully recovered.

Yoga has become a daily practice for me again (it really should be as a Yoga instructor but sometimes life gets in the way!) and my core has never been stronger. But every now and then if I feel I want to work the upper body without pushing it too much I have to think outside the box and head outside with one good arm, a pull-up bar and a backpack!
