The meaning of "Bon marché"

Orlando

Le Bon marché.

Did you know that in French we have no word to express the concept "cheap" ?

One may think that it's because Paris is expensive. Actually we do have an expression to express this concept: "bon marché", literally "good deal".

It is also the name of a famous department store in Paris: "Le bon marché". It is said to be among the oldest department stores in the world, those places which revolutionized the way of doing shopping by exposing the products so the clients can look at them freely.

Actually nowadays, ironically "the bon marché" department store is a very expensive and posh place. It should therefore rather be named "cher" which means "expensive" in French.

So if you wanna make a good deal don't go to the "bon marché". Go there if you're looking for exclusive and expensive merchandise :)
