Why Tipping is An American Custom

Zach McLaughlin

The topic of tipping often comes up in my Welcome to Canada lesson and also when I discuss the topic of "Culture Shock" in my conversation lessons. It is a custom that surprises (and sometimes upsets!) many visitors to North America, where tipping may feel like an obligation. In fact, "tipping culture" has even grown during the pandemic, with many restaurants looking for any extra money they can get to help them survive the lockdowns. However, some people believe that it's a custom that needs to end.

Earlier this year, CNBC produced an interesting video that explains the history of tipping. I've recommended it to several people, but I'd like to share it with everyone else out there who may be curious. Here it is: Why Tipping is An American Custom
