What was your favourite outdoor activity in school?

今週のテーマ: 学生時代に一番好きだった野外遊びは?

Zach McLaughlin

To be honest, I can’t remember doing many outdoor activities when I was a student. In elementary school, my class once went hiking in the forest behind our school. I remember that trip because we found a lot of horsetails (which we called snake grass) and enjoyed playing with them. Of course, we also did track and field events every year. Personally, I enjoyed the high jump and long jump events, but the best part of track meets was the canteen where we could buy freezies. That was a real treat after sweating a lot!

In high school, we went outside only occasionally to play sports. Since the Canadian school year extends from September to June, most of the months of the school year are cold, so we only play sports inside a gym. From September to mid-November, my high school was involved in soccer and football competitions. I enjoyed sports that allowed me to use my legs, so I played soccer on the high school team, and I also played hacky sack during breaks and did kickboxing after school. I have a lot of good memories from that time, like when everyone on our soccer team dyed their hair purple and we won the championship, and also some bad memories, like kicking my friend’s hacky sack onto the roof of the school or getting knocked out cold in a kickboxing match!

In college, I was not on any teams and didn’t join many school activities. I did live very close to my school, though, which had a huge forest around it, so I could always go hiking and enjoy nature.

Of all the outdoor activities I’ve done in my life, in school or otherwise, I think that going hiking in Killarney, Ontario was my favourite. In July, 2020, in the middle of the Covid pandemic, I wanted to get out of Toronto and escape from the lockdown atmosphere. Killarney, several hours north of Toronto, was the perfect place to go hiking, climbing, and swimming. I just wish there weren’t so many mosquitos up there! If you ever happen to visit Canada, try to make time to get out of the city and visit some of the more remote places, like Killarney, to really take in Canada’s nature. If you like outdoor activities, it’s worth the trip!
