Tables - Understand your Tables before you Describe them

Suja

You may sometimes be given a table with data in it that you will have to describe. You may face this in IELTS Task 1 .

Firstly, try to understand the table fully before you start to describe it. Here are some areas to look out for:

1) Read the question or the description of the table provided in the question , to get important information the task is needing you to answer. For example: The table shows the proportion of meat-eaters to vegetarians across the different towns of Japan
2) Look at the headings of the table
2) Look out for labels or a legend that describes the categories that may be covered in the table - for example: males, females, smokers, non-smokers, meat-eaters, vegetarians
3) Finally study the data within the table

Spending a couple of minutes doing this will give you a good idea about how you might want to develop your answer for Task 1.
