Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday.

2024年2月14日

Yesterday, 13 February, was Pancake Day in Britain! This comes from an old festival called Shrove Tuesday. In the past, when most people were Christian, people would use up all their rich food on this day. Pancakes were a good way to use up eggs, milk and flour.
Then they would begin Lent - a period before Easter when they were meant to prepare for Easter with prayer and not eating too much or too richly.

However, in our more secular times, most people just have pancakes. And the day is often called pancake day as well as Shrove Tuesday.

Some people like to squeeze lemon juice on their pancakes and then sprinkle them with sugar. Syrup like maple syrup is also quite popular. And you can also have them with ice cream and chocolate sauce!
Others like their pancakes with butter and jam, or even just butter and cheese, That is how I prefer mine. You can buy pancakes or make your own at home. I made my own yesterday. What do you like on your pancakes?

Secular: not religious
