We have got several idioms to talk about good and bad friends.

Fair-weather friend - A person who is only a friend when things are going well.

"I thought Jenny would be there for me when I lost my job, but she turned out to be a fair-weather friend."

Friends in high places - Having friends in powerful positions who can help you.

"Don't worry about getting the permit, I have friends in high places who can sort it out."

To hit it off - To quickly become good friends with someone.

"I met Sarah at the party last night, and we really hit it off. We're going out for coffee tomorrow!"

To know someone inside out - To know someone extremely well.

"You can't fool me with that face, I know you inside out and I can tell something's wrong."

Through thick and thin - Staying friends through good times and bad times.

"Even when times were tough, we stuck together through thick and thin."

To be joined at the hip - Very close friends who spend a lot of time together.

"Have you seen Jane and Hannah lately? They're always together, practically joined at the hip."

To bury the hatchet - To end a quarrel and become friends again.

"I know we've had our differences, but it's time to bury the hatchet and move on."

To go back a long way - To have been friends for a long time.

"Mark and I go back a long way, we've been friends since kindergarten."
