カフェトークの皆さん、こんにちは。KL在住のバイリンガル講師のKeiko Davyです。今日は今週のテーマ「今読んでいる本とお薦めの本を教えて下さい」に合わせてコラムを書いてみることにしました。
私が今だに読んでいる本は、The Lord of the Rings (指輪物語）です。映画は三篇ありましたが、本ももともとは３冊で、それが一冊にまとまった厚い本となっているので、読むのにすごく時間がかかっています…。厚すぎて旅行には持って行くことができないため、家でだけ読んでいるのも時間のかかっている理由です。あともう少しで読み終わることができそうです。
私が生徒さんにお勧めする本は何冊かあります。歴史に関わるような本が好きなので、なぜか全部戦争に関わるフィクションものです。英語学習者向けなので英語で簡単に説明してみました！ぜひ機会があれば読んでみて下さい。
"All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr
This book tells the story of Marie-Laure, a blind French girl, and Werner, a German boy, during World War II. Marie-Laure flees Paris with her father to the walled city of Saint-Malo, carrying a valuable gem from the museum where her father works. Werner, an orphan with a talent for fixing radios, is recruited by the Nazi army to track resistance broadcasts. Their lives converge in Saint-Malo, highlighting themes of resilience, the impact of war on individuals, and the unseen connections between people.
"A Town Like Alice" by Nevil Shute
This book tells the story of Jean Paget, a young Englishwoman who becomes a prisoner of war in Malaya during World War II. During her captivity, she meets an Australian soldier named Joe Harman, and they develop a deep bond. After the war, Jean inherits a significant sum of money and decides to find Joe in Australia. Upon reuniting, they work together to transform a small, undeveloped town into a thriving community, inspired by the town of Alice Springs. The novel explores themes of resilience, love, and the impact of determination on community development.
"The Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah
It is a historical novel set during World War II in Nazi-occupied France. It follows two sisters, Vianne and Isabelle, who respond differently to the war's challenges. Vianne, the elder, strives to protect her family and home in the village of Carriveau, even as German soldiers occupy her house. In contrast, the rebellious Isabelle joins the French Resistance, risking her life to save downed Allied pilots and lead them to safety. The novel explores themes of courage, sacrifice, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
