The Richness of Traditional Culture in the Philippines!

Melanie Partin

Did you know that there are so many different cultures, right here in the Philippines?  There are many different languages, cultures, and foods all in the same country!  There are different kinds of traditional dances, music, and tradition rituals that are still being practiced in different parts of the Philippines.  In the picture shown, this was during a festival where people dressed in traditional clothes and danced in the old traditional way.  The men carry gongs to play traditional musical beats, while the women dance.  They have the festival every year in June, when they have parades, and traditional dance contests between different schools and different towns.  They also have competitions for traditional weaving, wood carving, and other traditional crafts.  There is so much to learn from this rich culture, from traditional songs and dances, to traditional foods and festivals.  In the area where I live, many of the traditions circle around growing rice, which they still plant, grow, and harvest in the traditional way.  There are still traditional rituals called mumbaki, which include traditional prayers and chants.  Many traditions are becoming lost.... as more and more people stop performing them... but there are still traditions in their culture that are alive and active!  I am always learning facinating new things about the culture here.

There are so many interesting things to talk about, and traditional cultures is one of them!  Join me in English class, and we can talk about all the interesting things that people do in traditional ways.  You can learn new vocabulary words, and new expressions as we speak about different cultures here as well as in your home.  Are you interested in the traditions that have been passed down from many different generations?  What are the cultural traditions in your country?  I would love to hear about it!  Let's speak English and discuss facinating cultures and the importance of keeping these traditions alive!  We can also talk about other subjects as well :)
