“Oh,those!”

“Oh, those!”

How was your cherry blossom viewing this year?

We realise “oh, the spring has come” when we see cherry blossom. Particularly after I came to England, I came to think cherry blossom represents spring. (Actually, I may like dumplings better than flowers: “hana yori dango”.)

At first, I thought there wouldn’t be any cherry blossom here, I was a bit surprised when I some blooming here and there. There seem to be a good number of cherry trees in the parks and residential gardens.  The colours of the flowers come in various shades; from pure white, greenish white to bright pink, you can enjoy them as you have a stroll.

This year’s cherry blossoms are also excellent, I really love them.

In my first spring her in England, I used to say to the person who I was with, “Look at the beautiful cherry blossom” every time I found cherry trees in full bloom, but they were not impressed.  If I had been talking to a Japanese person, then we would have begun a small discussion about how nice the tree looked and the quality of the blossom this year.

“Could it be that cherry blossom is not popular abroad?  Just like Japanese sweets made with anko (sweet red bean jam), though the Japanese like them, they are not so popular in foreign countries.

Wondering about that, I was walking with a lady in the neighbourhood then she suddenly stopped and pointed ahead, saying “Yukari , look at that!  How  wonderful.”

I looked and saw absolutely wonderful fully bloomed cherry blossoms. I thought “Wow, how wonderful! Cherry blossoms are certainly popular here as well! “

“That yellow is really lovely, isn’t it?” said the lady.

YELLOW? Why yellow? What yellow?

Then I looked at the exact spot she was pointing to; under the wonderful blossoms there were some plain yellow daffodils…

In my mind, I said to the lady with a big smile on her face:

“Oh,those!”
