You're terrible, but that's OK. Now, try another version, with a slight change in the lyrics. This time, please complete the last line by yourself. Go!

♪ I have a CUP
♪ I have HOT TEA
♪ Uh
♪ (  )!

So, which of the following did you just say?

a) A CUP of HOT TEA
b) A HOT CUP of TEA

If you chose b), I hate you. I mean, I hate your phrasing. I know that most native English speakers would say it like b), but, to a non-native speaker and painfully logical thinker like me, that doesn't make sense at all. This is one of my pet peeves about phrasing, or PPAPs. Every time I hear someone use that kind of expression, that drives me (  )!

a) pens
b) pineapples
c) apples
d) bananas

Let me make my case. I'm sure that what you usually refer to as "a hot cup of tea" is a cup with hot tea poured into it. So, what's hot here is the tea, not the cup. You say the cup also is hot? That's because of the hot tea. The cup is NOT hot initially. Do you remember that lady who sued McDonald's? She claimed her coffee was too hot. See? She was absolutely correct! What was hot was the coffee. I guess the defense argued it was the cup that was hot. No wonder she won the case. So, please stop calling it "a hot cup of something" unless you really mean something that is served in a pre-heated cup! When someone asks me what drink I want, I always reply, "Hot coffee in a room-temperature cup, which gets hot once the coffee is poured in, but will eventually cool down, along with the coffee, to reach the thermal equilibrium of the system the cup and the coffee are in, which is approximately the same as the current temperature in this room, please."

Speaking of a cup of coffee, here's an update on the icon design for the yet-to-be-approved new Tutor Column category "Porpoises." My original drawing―a porpoise swimming in a cup of coffee―has drawn criticism from some of my readers as well as some animal-rights groups. They are concerned that the coffee may be too hot and not safe for the porpoise to swim in. Let me assure you the coffee is not hot! Only the cup is dangerously hot! I will modify the image to include a thermometer showing the temp of the cup so that everyone will believe me.

Enough with the tea and coffee talk. Now on to another PPAP of mine: "a cold bowl of cereal." How many of you have eaten this before? Can I have a show of flippers, please? Wow. All of you have?! I didn't know porpoises eat this kind of food. Anyway, let's examine this phrasing. Is the bowl cold? No. Is the cereal cold? No. Then, what is it that's supposed to be cold here? Yes, the milk! But, where did it come from? Cows? Yes, but that's not what I meant. My point is, how could there be milk when there's no mention of it in this expression? Every time I hear someone say it, that drives me (  )!

a) pens
b) pineapples
c) apples
d) nuts

In my household, if you say "a cold bowl of cereal," you won't get any milk. That's why I always eat my cereal with no milk, in a pre-refrigerated bowl.

Now you're about to enter a minefield. You'll encounter some phrasing questions along the way. Each question has two answer choices. Click on the correct one, and you'll be safe. If you click on the wrong one, though, it will blow up. You're not allowed to click on both choices. Good luck!

The song I picked for this post is "Kids" by American pop-rock band OneRepublic. The video begins with the band arriving in Mexico City, with three of the members rocking an identical pair of sunglasses / a pair of identical sunglasses. Then you'll see people loitering in a small alley between two rows of quaint brick houses / two quaint rows of brick houses. The whole place is adorned with strings of colorful lights / colorful strings of lights. I wonder which country this beautiful place is in. The video only says the city name.

Lyrically, this song is a remembrance of youth. Lead vocalist Ryan Tedder sings about the way he and his friends were when they were kids―doing crazy things, having crazy thoughts, saying crazy things. I guess they were cool kids. Anyway, they didn't realize back then that all those things were crazy. I guess that's exactly the stage of life I am at right now. Maybe I'm still a kid. Even if I'm acting crazy, I'm not aware of that yet. So, please forgive me if I say all crazy kinds of things / all kinds of crazy things. Just wait and put up with me until I grow up and wise up, as soon as I can, hopefully in my next life.

By the way, as you have probably noticed, "OneRepublic" is spelled as one word, without a space in between, just like "pineapple" and "Cafetalk." You can't write these words any other way. If you do that, it's a crime. In fact, Cafetalk even has a page for tutors about this, telling us NEVER to spell, space, or capitalize the name incorrectly. Common errors include Cafe Talk, Cafe-talk, Cafétalk. Sadly, I so often see some Cafetalk teachers blatantly violate this rule. We need to crack down on those offenders 24/7/365. That's why I ask for your help. I want all of you to be good proofreaders, and whenever you spot a misspelling of "Cafetalk," please report it immediately. Here's some quick training for you. Try these rapid-fire either/or questions. Click the correct spellings. You have only 3 seconds. Ready, set, go!

Welp, that's all for today! Thank you for reading my blog! Since it's the beginning of a new year, I'll announce my New Year's resolution for 2017. But, first, let me review my last year's resolutions. (☑: fulfilled, ☐: unfulfilled)

☐ 1) Gain weight.
☑ 2) Make an appearance on an annual 24-hour Japanese charity telethon.
☑ 3) Win a Nobel Prize for my work on autophagy.
☑ 4) Get arrested for endangering elderly residents in a senior care facility by lifting them with a crane and spoon-feeding them a Japanese go board.

The first one was an epic fail. I wonder how people do that so easily. I think I should focus solely on that this year. Thus, my goal for 2017 is:

Gain weight by winning the grand prize of a year's supply of ganmodoki in the Cafe-Talk Senryu Contest 2017.

a) A CUP of HOT TEA
b) A HOT CUP of TEA

a) ペン

a) ペン

メンバーのうち3人は(an identical pair of sunglasses / a pair of identical sunglasses)(※ identical:同一の)をかけています。それから、(two rows of quaint brick houses / two quaint rows of brick houses)(※ row:列、quaint:古風で趣のある)に挟まれた小さな路地で人々がうろついているのが見えます。その場所全体が(strings of colorful lights / colorful strings of lights)(※ string:ひも)で飾られています。

なので、もしぼくが(all crazy kinds of things / all kinds of crazy things)を言っても、どうか許してください。
