Parents: Helping your child learn English

Leah V

Learning English is difficult. It is even harder to when you have to help your child learn English too! The good news is, kids are curious, quick, and excited when it comes to learning. Adult brains don't think in the same way a child's does, and you need to trust that your child WILL learn English with practice, enthusiasm, and dedication.

Practice, practice, practice

Your child should be practicing English in some way EVERY DAY. If you have a child new to English, this can mean practicing writing one letter each day and saying the sound it makes.

I recommend buying plastic sheets and wet erase markers so he can practice the same sheet without wasting paper.

For older students, this can look like reading a book or story every day between lessons. Your child should be reading out loud too, not just in her head. This way, she will get to practice reading like a native English speaker and hear herself talk and pronounce words.

Hands-on activities help your child remember what they are learning. They should be interacting with their materials in more ways than one. That way, they will learn English faster, better, and more completely.
