Hello everyone!
If you have been following my columns you may have come across a piece entitled '3 commonly used British phases involving dogs' (https://cafetalk.com/column/read/?id=68973&lang=en). In this column I mentioned how much we love dogs in the UK, and how it would take more than one article to show you just how many phrases we use involving dogs – so here is part 2 of the series!
1. 'Working like a dog' - This refers to someone who is working extremely hard.
Example:
"You won't be home until 10pm tonight Michael!? Wow! Your company has got you working like a dog!"
2. 'You can't teach an old dog new tricks' - This phrase is used to mean that you cannot teach someone old something new.
Example:
"I tried teaching my grandmother how to use my iPad the other day but it was no use, she just didn't understand it. I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks!"
3. 'Underdog' - The underdog is the person who has the least chance of succeeding in something. This idiom is most commonly heard during sporting events.
Example:
"Why are you cheering for that team to win the baseball tonight, Gary? They have no chance!"
"I always love to support the underdog!"
