In this lesson we will have an in-depth look at preparing for IELTS writing task 1.
Writing task 1 is an excellent way to pick up 'cheap' points on the IELTS exam. The approach to this task is very formulaic and once you are familiar at using the vocabulary to describe line graphs, tables, bar charts and diagrams you can be confident that you will pick up most to all of the available points for this section.
In this lesson, we will take example IELTS Writing Task 1 questions and identify a strategy to correctly understand the question asked. We will also introduce a set of vocabulary to use when answering these questions and practise using this vocabulary with correct grammar to ensure we can achieve the best possible outcome in the exam
The verb forms we look at will include verbs and phrasal verbs such as:
Rise (to)
Increase (to)
Went up (to)
Climbed (to)
Fell (to)
Declined (to)
Decreased (to)
Dipped (to)
Dropped (to)
Went down (to)
Slumped (to)
Reduced (to)
Fluctuated
Peaked
Plateaued
As well as adjectives that describe and detail these verbs such as
Steady
Constant
Dramatic
Sharp
Notable
We can then gain useful experience at using this vocabulary in sentences that efficiently answer the question given. For example.
"From the graph given it can be seen that over the entire time period on display, there was a steady increase in the number of households that used the Internet for watching television in the one US city given. In 2004, the number of households using the Internet to watch television was less than 10, 000, however over the next ten years this figure had risen to just under 200,000 households by 2014".
At the end of the lesson I will give you example questions for homework and we can review your methodology and any grammatical mistakes that arise in the next lesson.
I will also provide extra resources which detail the vocabulary that will be in use so you are equipped to tackle these types of question into the future.
