Tutu was born to a poor family in Klerksdorp, of South Africa, of mixed Xhosa and Motswana heritage. He qualified as a teacher, entering adulthood,

As he rose to prominence in the 1970s, Tutu divided opinions.

White conservatives who endorsed apartheid despised him, although he was seen as too progressive by many white liberals; he was accused by many black revolutionaries of being too moderate and concentrating on cultivating white goodwill, while his anti-communist stance was criticised by Marxist-Leninists. Among the black majority of South Africa.

He was widely popular among South Africa's black majority, and was internationally praised for his anti-apartheid activism, receiving an array of awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.

He has also compiled several books of his speeches and sermons.
