Describe the World.

Kursinhalt

OVERVIEW

Colours and shapes are everywhere — in the classroom, on clothing, in nature, on toys. This lesson uses the world children can already see to teach them their first descriptive English vocabulary. Through games, drawing, singing, and movement, children learn to name what they see and describe it in simple English sentences. The result is a child who can look at anything and say something about it in English.

TOPICS COVERED

Colour words: red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, pink, white, black, brown

Shape names: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, star, heart

     Basic description: "It is a + colour + shape/noun"

Question forms: "What colour is it?" / "What shape is it?"

Classroom and everyday object vocabulary in context

SKILLS DEVELOPED

Vocabulary- colours and shapes as foundational descriptive language

Speaking- describing objects using simple sentence patterns

Listening- following instructions that contain colours and shapes

Writing readiness- labelling drawings in English

TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Colours and shapes are introduced through a mixture of visual flashcards, physical objects, and the classroom environment itself. Children touch, point at, and collect real items before they match them to English words. The lesson is structured as a series of mini-games that flow into each other, keeping energy high and attention focused throughout.

I Spy is a cornerstone activity that requires no preparation and can run for as long as needed- it naturally recycles vocabulary and keeps every child alert, since anyone could be called on at any moment. Bingo brings friendly competition and focused listening. The Rainbow Drawing Race combines creativity with language production. Songs and chants (e.g., a simple "Red and yellow, green and blue" chant) provide rhythmic reinforcement that helps vocabulary stick in long-term memory.

WHO IS THIS LESSON FOR?

Perfect for complete beginners aged 6 to 10. Particularly effective as a second or third lesson following an introduction to greetings and numbers. Also suitable for slightly older learners (10–12) with zero English exposure who benefit from a visual and kinaesthetic start.
