Lesson 1: Deciphering Idioms and Slang

Objective: To understand and correctly use common English idioms and slang in conversation.

Warm-up: Match idioms with their meanings.

Main Activity: The student creates sentences using a list of new idioms.

Guided Discussion: Talk about the origin of some idioms and how they are used in everyday conversation.

Lesson 2: The Art of Small Talk

Objective: To confidently start, maintain, and end a casual conversation with a stranger or acquaintance.

Key Vocabulary:how was your weekend?, the weather is beautiful today, what do you do?, it was great talking to you, I should get going.

Activities:

Warm-up: Talk about a recent social situation.

Main Activity: A simulated networking event where the student must initiate a conversation with three different "people."

Discussion: Analyze what makes for a good conversation and what topics to avoid.

Wrap-up: Practice polite ways to end a conversation without being rude.

Lesson 3: Being Polite - Formal vs. Informal Language

Objective: To understand the difference between formal and informal language and choose the right level of politeness for different social situations.

Key Vocabulary:could you...?, would you mind...?, please, thank you so much, I appreciate it, hey, thanks, no problem.

Warm-up: Sort phrases into "formal" and "informal" categories.

Lesson 4: Understanding Body Language and Tone

Objective: To recognize and interpret non-verbal cues and understand how tone of voice affects communication.

Key Vocabulary:body language, facial expression, tone of voice, sarcastic, enthusiastic, confused.

Warm-up: Watch short video clips without sound and describe the emotion or intention of the speaker.

Main Activity: I will say the same sentence with different tones of voice, and the student will interpret the meaning.

Discussion: Talk about cultural differences in body language and gestures.

Wrap-up: A final role-play where the student must use both verbal and non-verbal communication to convey a specific message.
