Beauty is one of the reasons that we enjoy living. But, what exactly is beauty?
'Beautiful' can describe a butterfly, a child, a landscape, the weather, a piece of music, even a perfume. How can one adjective describe so many different things?
Many people believe that the main goal of artists is to produce things that are beautiful.
For thousands of years, philosophers have asked the question: 'What is beauty?' Is there something objective and universal about beauty? (In other words, does beauty exist in the object considered and will all humans agree about what is beautiful?
These are some of the questions that we will consider in this lesson.
We also look at and discuss several pictures of natural things and works of art to help shape our ideas.
Although there is some philosophy in this lesson, it does not require knowledge of philosophy. It is designed to enable intermediate and advanced English speakers to use their language skills to discuss some rather involved ideas.
