Let's chat every day. Take this lesson and learn an idiom a day and how to use it, plus an inspirational quote from a famous English person. Watch out though. The idioms and quotes change every day, so be careful not to miss any!
Подробности урока
British people use a lot of idioms. They can be confusing for the learner because at first they seem to make no sense. We can also learn a lot from quotes made by some famous British people, past and present. For example, who said "We build too many walls and not enough bridges"? It was the scientist Sir Isaac Newton, responsible for numerous discoveries, including the laws of gravity and of motion. His quote is as relevant today as it was in the 1700's.
The class proceeds in 4 steps.
1. The teacher reads the idiom aloud and explains what it means. The student then repeats the phrase aloud and their pronunciation is checked. We will then try to use the idiom in some real sentences
2. The teacher reads the quote aloud. The student then repeats the phrase aloud and their pronunciation is checked
3. There is then a short discussion about the quote and what it means, as well as about the person who said it
5. Wrap up - new vocabulary learned, pronunciation issues identified
4. Homework - practice using the idiom and/or sharing the quote with friends and/or colleagues
The benefits of this class are as follows:
1. You will learn a new idiom and how to use it every day. You can build up a library of idioms for yourself
2. You will also learn a quote a day from some of the most notable people in British history. These quotes can often be inspiring and help us in our daily life. At the same time you can learn a bit about these people and their contribution to British culture
3. Each class also gives you the opportunity to speak and discuss the idioms and quotes with the teacher
My teaching style is calm, friendly and non-judgemental but I am prepared to challenge a student to go further, particularly if the topic requires the student to have an opinion. By chatting regularly and learning an idiom/quote a day we can build up a good relationship over time.
