Helping every child find their voice

Description

Description:
This lesson is designed for children who experience delayed speech, slow speaking, or atypical speech patterns. The focus is on building confidence, encouraging gradual speech production, improving rhythm, clarity, and pacing, and fostering positive social interaction. Activities emphasize repetition, visual and auditory cues, and low-pressure participation.

Themes:

  1. Breathing & Voice Warm-Up

  2. Simple Sentences & Repetition

  3. Slow & Clear Storytelling

  4. Turn-Taking & Listening

  5. Positive Self-Expression

Learning Activities with Challenges & Solutions

  1. Warm-Up – “Breathing & Voice Exercises”

    • Activity: Simple deep breaths, blowing bubbles, humming, and gentle tongue twisters.

    • Challenge: Students may feel self-conscious or lack breath control.

    • Solution: Make it a fun game (who can blow the biggest bubble?) and participate with them to reduce anxiety.

  2. Echo Game – “Say After Me”

    • Activity: Teacher says a word or short sentence; students repeat it slowly and clearly.

    • Challenge: Difficulty pronouncing certain sounds or words.

    • Solution: Break words into syllables, use visual aids or gesture cues, and praise all attempts.

  3. Slow Storytelling – “My Day in 3 Sentences”

    • Activity: Students describe their morning or favorite activity in 3 short sentences, slowly and clearly.

    • Challenge: Students may rush or get stuck mid-sentence.

    • Solution: Provide sentence starters, allow gestures or drawing to support speech, and give plenty of pauses.

  4. Turn-Taking Circle – “Pass the Word”

    • Activity: Students take turns saying one word to build a collective sentence or story.

    • Challenge: Late speakers may wait too long or feel anxious.

    • Solution: Give a visual token or “speaking stick” to signal whose turn it is; model first.

  5. Positive Expression – “I Like…”

    • Activity: Students say one thing they like about school, a friend, or themselves.

    • Challenge: Fear of judgment or hesitant speech.

    • Solution: Encourage gestures or pointing if words are hard; repeat their words back slowly to reinforce correct rhythm and clarity.
