coffee_sun Tutor Interview

Q. Hi Shin young! Thank you for taking the time to do this interview. To start off, can you tell your students a little bit about where you come from/where you grew up?

A. Hi everyone, I'm Shing young. I teach Korean on Cafetalk, and I live in the capital city of Korea, Seoul. Seoul has many sites where you can learn Korean history, and yet the city has modern traits. I especially want to introduce different walking trails in Seoul. There are trails where you can see forest views and city views, and you can also walk trails decorated with clothes. I recommend you to visit these walking trails in Korea.

Q. Can you tell us a little bit more about your professional background? What got you into teaching on Cafetalk?

A. I work at a share house where I meet people from all over the world. It became natural to me to learn different languages and cultures from these people. As I began exchange languages with many foreign friends, I realized that I could grow more by teaching my native language. I then started Korean professionally while studying Korean language education and English.

Q. What are you usually up to when you’re not teaching on Cafetalk? What are your hobbies and interests?

A. I wanted to become a musical theatre actress when I was in college but ended up working at a coffee company. However, I started learning ballet four years because I always wanted to be on the stage. I usually practice ballet and go to coffee shops to taste good coffee. Coffee and ballet enrich the quality of my life.

Q. A lot of students are probably curious about the atmosphere in your lessons. What can a student imagine a lesson with you to be like? What’s your teaching style?

A. I make sure my students take my lessons in a comfortable atmosphere. Most of my classes are one-to-one, and I listen to students' needs and difficulties very carefully. I always think about my students' needs and recommend study methods. I think everyone has their effective study methods. I try to guide my students to find an effective study method.

Q. Since you offer a variety of lessons, is there any lesson you can recommend in particular? Or can you give a quick overview of which lesson might be good for which type of student?

A. I recommend "Let's Talk in Korean" as I conduct this lesson according to students' needs and give feedback afterward. I also "Sutdyig Korean with News". It is for students who are intermediate or above. You can learn Korean expressions and also recent news in Korea.

Q. Finally, would you like to leave a message for your current and future students?

A. Do you have an experience where you enjoyed your journey because you had a good guide? I will also be your guide for your journey of learning Korean. You will be more familiar with the language and find yourself joy in learning Korean if you study the language with me. I will see you in my class.
