"Hectic". This is a word I hear almost daily in South Africa, but I've come to notice it isn't real...

ClaireMcC Tutor Profile

Hello!
I hope you feel welcome. My name is Claire, and I love teaching, and getting to know people :)

My
Backstory
I grew up on a farm in rural eSwatini and have always had a passion for working with people. My large, multi-cultural family (over 60 people) has ensured that I've had endless hours of taking care of, working with, and living life with children and youth of all different ages. I love getting to know people and try my best to always understand where they are coming from. That's why I studied Occupational Therapy, because it enabled me to work with people holistically and provided me with the skills I would need to better help people. OT changed my perspective of learning - it's so much more than just textbooks and lessons. Learning encompasses our whole lives, and each individual has a unique way of approaching the world arround them, which is reflected in their learning styles.
I have a gentle and calm personality, and am extremely patient with my students. My teaching style tends to be very interactive and participatory in nature, so my lessons will be as learner-centred as possible. Combined with my love for planning and organising, however, the lessons are bound to be as structured as they are customised.

In my spare time, I love gardening, painting, playing piano, reading, pottery, travelling and the outdoors. This is where I started to learn about medicinal plants and how they can help us to live healthier lives. I think hobbies are a great way to connect with people and learn a language! I look forward to learning as much from my students as what you will hopefully learn from me.

Music has always been a big part of my life. I play the piano and flute, and achieved teaching level when I was still in high school. I believe it is also very important to supplement practical ability with knowledge, and so music theory is also very important to me. It can be so much fun to learn about music theory when you understand where it is used!

Teaching Background
Most of my experience is in teaching face-to-face lessons for younger children. I have also had lots of experience tutoring high-school students in subjects like Mathematics and English. I feel comfortable working with people of all ages (even up to and including retirement age).
I have also lead plenty of book clubs and would always be up to discussing a new book!
