Hello! My name is Tatyana, or simply Tanya. I hold a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley and a master's degree with high honors from the Sorbonne University in Paris. I have 7 years of experience teaching English as a foreign language in France. I was recruited specifically with the goal of helping French students learn English and expand their knowledge of Anglophone cultures. I have worked for 2 years at the high school and junior high level. However, the larger part of my career was devoted to teaching at higher education establishments such as Sorbonne Paris North University, Sorbonne University, and Cergy-Pontoise University.

My experience includes working with a wide range of different types of courses. I have taught general English to students who studied this language as an additional discipline alongside their primary specialization. Additionally, I designed specific courses, such as General American and General British phonetics, oral comprehension, oral expression, translation from English to French and French to English, as well as business English. My students had varying levels of initial preparation, from beginners (A1/A2 levels) to virtually bilingual scholars (B2/C1 levels). During the COVID pandemic I gained valuable experience of teaching all my classes online, utilizing a variety of platforms.

Before starting my teaching career in France, I had also tutored pupils ages 6 to 12 in California, most notably as a part of the No Child Left Behind Act, which aimed to improve scholastic achievements of disadvantaged and under-performing students.

Additionally, I have experience working in a cultural center in Moscow, Russia. I managed staff during events, wrote articles for the website and media partners, and generated content for social networks. I also started and led a club called “Freetalk”, where any interested learners could practice conversational English.

My professional experience also includes working for a non-profit educational company, where I helped build relationships with educators in elementary, junior high and high schools to foster the utilization of the free resources for teachers provided on an online platform. I also helped search for sources of financing and write press releases.

To improve my qualification, I have obtained a master’s degree in Anglophone Studies from the Sorbonne University. Although the curriculum included diverse disciplines, such as classical literature, translation, social sciences, visual art and film studies, I have specialized in Gothic Literature. As a part of my coursework, I have written and defended two master theses, which explored the connections between works of contemporary thriller literature and original themes of Gothic literature.

I aim to make my classes as interactive and engaging as possible. I adjust lessons to every student’s initial mastery of a language, their goals and personal interests. I am committed to making lessons that are designed around the subject that learners are truly passionate about. Whether a student wants to improve their language skills based on their favorite game characters, their traveling ambitions, works of literature, scientific discoveries or any other subject, I am excited to start the journey together! My teaching style is very dynamic, but I always adapt the speed of the lesson based on the student’s capacities and level of comfort.

I look forward to working with you!
