After completing a master’s degree in mathematics at a national university in Japan, I worked as a teacher at a public junior high school and a private junior and senior high school. However, after leaving my job to accompany my family on their job transfer, I had the chance to experience various opportunities, including tutoring and volunteering in childcare support.
Recently, I have been working as a private tutor and cram school tutor teaching elementary, middle and high school students.
My hobbies are going on field trips and observing nature.
This is why I also love teaching “自由研究 (school research projects that allow students to research freely)” to students.
Doesn’t the word “自由 (freedom)” alone sound so exciting?
However, just as traffic rules must be obeyed even when you are told to ” go ahead and play around freely,” there are also basic rules for research, even if you are allowed to research freely.
I live in the suburbs of Japan, where fireflies can be seen in early summer.
There are many different types of fireflies, but I love the “Hime Botaru (a type of firefly indigenous to Japan)” in my neighborhood.
The females of these fireflies cannot fly, so they cannot survive once they leave their region.
So, as I cared and wondered if they survived each year, I became more attached to them year by year.
In my neighborhood, traditional Japanese summer festivals and New Year’s festivels are held.
One of the most memorable moments for me recently, was when I had the opportunity to see a replica of a metric standard. This was an important item when Japan adopted the international system of units for trade and other purposes.
In math class, we learn about various units of measure, so I also researched what kind of units of measurement are used in different areas.
What textbooks convey may only be a small part of what the world has to offer, but I would be delighted if I could help people feel a sense of the hopes and aspirations that are contained in them, expanding their imaginations, and helping them establish an understanding of the world.
