MihoWatarai Tutor Profile

This tutor is currently on leave.

Hello. My name is Miho and I am a Shizuoka based composer and musician. In addition to composing and performing, I have also been teaching private music theory lessons, including classical harmony theory, ever since graduating from music school.

I teach subjects that make up the fundamentals of classical music, including musical grammar (how to read music), harmony (the structure of harmonies and how to create them) musical analysis (the in depth study of how classical music is organized and structured in order to cultivate a deeper understanding of musical composition). Through these lessons, I hope to help everyone who is interested in music, from aspiring musicians and composers to those who are taking up music as a hobby. I can offer lessons that meet your requirements and I hope these lessons will help you enjoy music to the fullest.

If you don’t know much about music yet, but are interested in getting started, please feel free to contact me!

<Musical Experience>
Miho Watarai began piano at the age of 5 and songwriting full scale at the age of 14. She majored in songwriting in the music department of Tokyo College of Music. Not only did she release her new ensemble songs upon graduating, but she also began performing as a piano soloist in 2003 and participated in non-classical live events. In addition to performing her own compositions, she also began doing improvisation performances and in 2005 she collaborated with a Paris based Japanese artist in the joint show “Paris no Esprit Nihon no Esprit.” She collaborates with other genres of art, does free improvisation sessions with the harmonica keyboard, and composes and edits songs for other musicians. In recent years, as of 2007, she has been event planning, composing for and performing at Buster Keaton Silent Cinema Live events at SND Cafe in Shimizu Ward. In fall of 2009 she performed music and piano for Le Mariage forcé, a community theater show featuring Jun Ooka and performed at the Tsukiminosato Workshop Center in Fukuroi. She also performed piano for (Public Interest Incorporated Association) Shizuoka Performing Arts Center (SPAC)’s “An Afternoon of Piano and Recitation by SPAC Actors,” is active in “Honoka,” a unit with SPAC actor Asuka Fuse, and collaborates with stage actors at recitation events. In 2014 she broadened her talents in theatrical music by composing and performing the music for Hamamatsu Theater and Puppet Show Festival’s joint project “What Do Angels Eat?” Up until now, she has composed over 20 pieces for recitation events. She also holds courses and workshops on topics such as musical analysis and music theory. In October to November of 2015, she received praise for her compositions and musical performances at SPAC’s latest production “The Birds” (directed by Jun Ooka).

<Teaching Experience>
After graduating college, I began teaching private lessons in harmony and continued on to teach lessons in musical grammar, solfege, piano, musical analysis and more for about 15 years, successfully helping students get into junior colleges of music and other music schools.

From 2005 to 2013, I worked twice as a contract teacher twice Shimizu Minami Prefectural High School in Shizuoka, teaching composition to music majors in the fine arts track. I have helped students pass the entrance exams for the composition major at Tokyo College of Music and Tokyo University of the Arts.

In recent years, I have been holding music courses and workshops at the University of Shizuoka and for general learners, including distance learning courses via Skype and email.
