Judy Blue Tutor Profile

This tutor is currently on leave.

Hello! My name is Judy.

(※日本語はこちら)

I will be away from the internet between 5/3 and 5/10. I apologise for any inconvenience.

Teaching experience
I've been teaching English online since March 2018, mostly to children between 2 and 13 years old. I intended to teach for a short time, but I loved it so much I continued, and got my Celta certificate. I've taught adults as well as children, both one-on-one and in groups, in-person and online.

Educational philosophy
I like to adapt to each student's needs, interests, strengths, and personality. I can use formal curriculum material, but even if you work with a formal curriculum, I encourage you to make free talk a priority. There's no such thing as 'ready' - and the earlier you can lose your inhibitions about speaking in English, the better. I know it's very difficult! I sympathise, and I want to help you feel confident.

About me
My background is in archaeology and history. I have a BSc in archaeological science, an MA in medieval and Renaissance culture (history), and a PhD in archaeology, all from UK universities. I'm American, but I've spent a lot of time in the UK. I have an adult daughter. I like to travel with my cat. Sometimes I live on a boat. My electricity comes from solar panels or my engine. My water is heated on the wood stove (or from the heat of the engine). I spend most of my time in beautiful countryside. It's very cozy and homely.

I'm an introvert, so initially teaching was very difficult and stressful for me! In my first lessons, I was shaking so much that my teeth chattered, and I had a hard time breathing normally! However, my life is so much richer as a result of meeting so many students and families over the years. I still get nervous when I meet a student for the first time, but I'm also excited, because we probably have things in common we both love, or we have differences that are really interesting to explore and talk about. I've become more and more playful the longer I work with kids, so I'm much more gregarious than I used to be. Teaching has helped me be more outgoing and confident in meeting new people.

I can be very enthusiastic about things that interest me, and I really REALLY love sharing things I love with other people.

I always reach to learn new things. This is often a fault - sometimes I don't stick with things long enough to become proficient! But I'm working on this.

I like knitting, cycling in the countryside, reading, and learning. I studied Latin, but it got rusty, so now I'm teaching Latin so I can use it and practice it more, and I use text books that are 100 years old or more - they're so cool! I'm "learning" violin, but I've never gotten past the first half of my first violin book! I keep promising myself I will make time for the things I love, but I need to get better about it. I've also been starting and stopping the process of really learning R very well! I have some excellent books to learn from, but I always get interrupted before I finish. I want to learn Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Greek, French, and Norwegian, and I want to travel to so many places, but travel with a cat is difficult.

I think English poetry can be an awesome way to improve pronunciation and natural-sounding speech while also learning more vocabulary and expanding your knowledge of the culture or history of the author. I love sharing my favourite poems and authors with people.

I'm really looking forward to meeting you!

At this time, my schedule is very limited due to family commitments. I apologise for the inconvenience. I might not be able to accept new students for a while. I hope to be able to expand my schedule again soon. Thank you for your patience!
